A comfortable visit for every visitor

We want everyone to be able to visit Historium as comfortably as possible. Below, you will find practical information regarding reachability, access, and the accessibility of our experiences.

Historium actively collaborates with visitors and organizations to continuously improve accessibility. Feedback is always welcome.

Access to the building

The entrance is accessible for wheelchair users. Upon arrival, follow a slight incline towards the inner courtyard. Just before the main gate, there is a door on the left providing access to the elevator. You will enter on level 0.

  • For the ticket desk and Historium Virtual Reality, take the elevator to level E.
  • The accessible toilet is located on level -1.
  • The Duvelorium is located on level 1.


In emergency situations, our team is trained to assist visitors with disabilities.

Accessibility

Historium is located on the Market Square in Bruges. The surrounding area consists of historical cobblestones.
Accessible parking spaces are available nearby. There are 2 accessible parking spaces at Philipstockstraat 5 (next to Historium).

From these parking spaces, it is approximately 100 meters to the entrance. You may also use the side entrance (Philipstockstraat 2). Through this entrance, you cross the inner courtyard to reach the main entrance and the elevator.

Please note: the surface is uneven and consists of cobblestones.

Visitors with a physical disability or wheelchair users

Historium is largely accessible to wheelchair users. Some sections require assistance or adapted routes.

  • We recommend bringing a companion.
  • All passages and doors are sufficiently wide.
  • Wheelchair users can move through the building via the elevator.
  • A standard wheelchair is available at the ticket desk (free of charge, subject to availability).
  • For a comfortable visit, we allow a maximum of 2 wheelchair users per show.
  • During busy periods, there may be a short waiting time.
  • Are you visiting with multiple wheelchair users? Please contact us in advance so we can provide assistance.
  • Adapted route with personal assistance.
  • Wheelchair users and one companion will be assisted via the elevator.
  • Not suitable for electric wheelchairs or mobility scooters.
  • Transferring to a standard wheelchair is necessary.
  • During the visit, you will use 2 stairwells of 20 steps each.
  • Seating is provided in most rooms.

Folding chairs available during the visit.

  • Experience is seated.
  • First row without a threshold.
  • Other rows have a small threshold.
  • Less accessible.
  • Only accessible via stairs (145 steps).
  • No seating available.

Visitors with a visual impairment or who are blind or partially sighted

  • Visitors with a visual impairment and an EDC card receive free admission to Historium Story and Exhibition.
  • A visit without a companion is not feasible.
  • The carpet in the entrance hall leads to the ticket desk. Please be mindful of the steps beneath the carpet.
  • The elevator is equipped with braille buttons.
  • Some rooms are very dark.
  • The story is told via screens and audio.
  • Dialogues and the narrator are audible via the audio guide.

You can listen to the explanations via your audio guide.

Highly visual, but with additional audio explanation.

Not accessible for safety reasons.

Visitors with a hearing impairment or who are deaf or hard of hearing

Visitors with a hearing impairment and an EDC card receive free admission to Historium Story and Exhibition.

  • Audio guide for every visitor.
  • It may be more difficult for deaf visitors to follow the full experience.
  • Audio guide available for explanations.
  • Written texts with explanations are available.
  • Visual experience, but with additional explanation via audio.
  • Written introduction available upon request from the staff member at Historium Virtual Reality.

Accessible.

Visitors with a cognitive impairment, ASD, PTSD, or epilepsy

  • During busy periods, there may be a waiting time.
  • Quietest times:
    • End of the day (4:00 PM – 5:00 PM)
    • Saturday evening (6:00 PM – 8:00 PM)
  • Other visitors may be present and making noise.

Fixed route of 35 minutes. Consists of 2 introductory rooms and 7 themed rooms.

Please note: the visit includes dark spaces; animatronics and light flashes are present.

Self-guided visit at your own pace. Average duration: 15 minutes.

Waiting times possible. Duration: 8 minutes.

Visitors with claustrophobia

  • Less suitable for persons with claustrophobia.
  • Dark and enclosed spaces.
  • Panic buttons available to exit the attraction.

Open space. VR goggles can be removed at any time.

Narrow and small viewpoint. The passage of the entrance door is 45 cm wide.

Assistance dogs

Pets are not allowed, with the exception of assistance dogs wearing a vest.
